On the Couch with
Christopher McGowan

Join us for another On the Couch session where a high achieving individual is interviewed by a peer about their public sector ‘journey’, their experiences and why they have chosen their career and current role. Since its inception this series has acted as the host for a very significant number of former and current public sector leaders.

Our next guest is Christopher McGowan, Chief Executive, SA Health and in our latest session we will be exploring some of the highlights of his career and his plans for hs current role.

Christopher will be interviewed by Nathan Schlesinger, Partner, PwC with the proceedings being MC'd by Jamie Briggs, Partner, PwC.

Dr McGowan has a background expanding over 30 years of health and human service policy, management and leadership.  He has been Director of Health Reform and a Director of Primary Health Care for the South Australian Government.  He has also led public and private hospitals and been a Director of Local Hospital Networks and Medicare Local/Primary Health Care networks.
As CEO of Silver Chain Group (incorporating RDNS SA), Dr McGowan was responsible for Australia’s largest community based palliative care service supporting over 2500 patients per year who are in their last three months of life.  Silver Chain also delivered extensive community based health care including a virtual hospital supporting approximately 1,100 patients at any one time who would otherwise be in acute hospital settings.  The subject of Dr McGowan’s PhD was the public hospital cost of end-of-life care.
Currently Dr McGowan is the Chief Executive for the Department of Health and Wellbeing.  Chris is responsible to the Minister for Health and Wellbeing for the governance, leadership and management of the South Australian health system.
