IPAA SA’s On the Couch sessions are a series of informal interviews with key leaders of the public sector. In their current roles, these leaders are seen as having a high degree of responsibility and influence over the future of the public sector and the people who work within it.

These interviews are aimed at looking at the person behind the role and focus on their interests, influences, leadership styles, career highlights, journey, aspirations, values and what they see as their priorities in their current role and insights for the future.

Our special guest for this event is Jim Whalley, South Australian Chief Entrepreneur. Mr Whalley is the Chair and co-founder of innovative defence industry company Nova Systems and a former air force fighter pilot and test pilot.

This was an opportunity to hear first-hand about the life and ideas of Jim Whalley in an informal interview conducted by Imelda Alexopoulos, Partner, PwC. The interview concluded with a brief Q&A session with questions from the audience.

Jim Whalley

South Australian Chief Entrepreneur

As South Australia’s first Chief Entrepreneur, Jim Whalley has been appointed to provide strategic advice to enable entrepreneurialism across all forms of business, industry and public sector in South Australia.

The Chief Entrepreneur, together with the Entrepreneurship Advisory Board, will support entrepreneurs to build their capabilities and their confidence, to make sure they have the skills to grow a business from concept through creation, bring their ideas to market and turn their innovations into commercial outcomes.

Jim is the Chair and co-founder of innovative defence industry company Nova Systems.

He is a former air force fighter pilot and test pilot and holds a Master of Business Administration, a science degree and has completed the Harvard Business School OPM Executive Education Program.

Jim is a member of the Sir Ross and Keith Smith Advisory Committee, the council of the University of South Australia, the board of the Adelaide Festival, and a nonexecutive director of Australian Naval Infrastructure.
