During the Premier’s Address to the Public Sector released 7 May 2020, Premier Steven Marshall extended his sincere thanks to the exemplary efforts of all those delivering services to the community in these challenging times.
Prior to the interview Michael O’Brien gave a moving Welcome to County, highlighting the importance of opportunities such as this to share knowledge.
Premier Marshall was interviewed by Commissioner for Public Sector Employment, Erma Ranieri. Commissioner Ranieri addressed a number of questions from the audience to the Premier seeking his insight into the response to COVID-19, as described below.
To all public sector employees and affiliates, a key takeaway of the Premier’s Address is to keep up their great work which to date has put the state in a great position to meet the evolving challenges of COVID-19. Premier Marshall also emphasised that he can see the state coming out of this pandemic ‘stronger than before’, and the efforts of people working for the public purpose will be the cornerstone in achieving this outcome.

South Australia Police, Commissioner, Grant Stevens APM praised the efforts of the Public Sector and the broader community in their response to the COVID-19 crisis. Commissioner Stevens also shared with us his calm and diligent approach in managing this pandemic in his key role as State Coordinator.

By huge demand from our member community, we are proud to announce the launch of our Member Mentoring Program. This program pairs young professionals within the public sector with experienced mentors in a relationship of mutual learning and benefit for both parties. In light of COVID-19 this program will continue ahead, though face-to-face meetings will temporarily be held virtually to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all our community.
The program will run over six (6) months and will match a mentor to a mentee based on their skills, experience, and development goals. Participants can expect a likely time commitment of at least one face-to-face or virtual meeting per four-six weeks, but the exact commitment is to be agreed between the mentor and mentee.
Personal Members are invited to express their interest in a place as a mentee in the program – there is no additional charge to Personal Members to participate in the program. If you are interested in being a mentor, membership is not required.

The work of a team of researchers from Edith Cowan University on innovative work behaviour in the public sector has been published in the March 2020 Issue of the Australian Journal of Public Administration.
Successive Australian governments have placed a high importance on innovation since the mid-2000s. However, the majority of research on organisational innovation is from the United States and Europe (see, for instance, the work of Anderson, Potočnik and Zhou, 2014). This new research by Dr Yuliani Suseno, Professor Craig Standing, Associate Professor Denise Gengatharen and Dr Diep Nguyen from the School of Business and Law at Edith Cowan University, helps correct this imbalance through the study of a large Australian public sector organisation.
Innovation work behaviour has been defined as the ‘behaviour directed towards the initiation and application… of new and useful ideas, processes, products or procedures’ (see De Jong and Den Hartog, 2007).
It has further been described by Scott and Bruce (1994) as a three-stage process:
