In July 2023 , IPAA SA Members had the opportunity to hear from Damien Walker, Chief Executive, Department of the Premier and Cabinet as he joined us for An Hour in the Room. The word that resonates post-event is CURIOSITY, with the ambition of the public sector being a driving force for future achievement and growth in South Australia. Every public servant has a role to play in fostering a spirit of innovation, problem-solving and continuous improvement.
An Hour in the Room With Damien Walker
At this event, we heard from internationally renowned work design expert Professor Sharon K. Parker on how the principles of good work design could help you and your teams thrive by enhancing and protecting employees’ psychological and physical health. Professor Parker provided evidence-based practical steps for leaders to support their teams and colleagues to thrive at work. A John Curtin Distinguished Professor at Curtin University and Director of the Centre for Transformative Work Design (CTWD), Professor Parker aims to transform work and the workplace to protect and promote worker health and well-being, create agile and digitally-ready organisations, and develop worker capability. On the Couch with Professor Sharon Parker
In October, the South Australian Premier, the Hon. Peter Malinauskas, took to the stage to make his second ‘Address to the Public Sector’. During this event, the Premier presented updates on the progress and his economic and policy priorities for 2023 and the future. Discussion topics ranged from his government’s world-first Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Act and AUKUS nuclear submarines to the state-wide housing plan, SA’s comprehensive preschool-to-university education and skills development policies, building and supporting the best-practice public service, and more. During this event, attendees could actively participate by posing their questions directly to the Premier through the Audience Q&A session facilitated by Erma Ranieri, Commissioner for Public Sector Employment and IPAA SA President.
Premier’s Address to the Public Sector 2023
Last July, we welcomed Damien Walker to speak about his new appointment as Chief Executive of the Department of the Premier and Cabinet, sharing his insights and plans for the role. We have now invited Damien back to hear his views on the SA public sector and his position a year later. This event will allow our members to hear directly from Damien about the challenges and opportunities he has seen in the sector. Also, during this session, we ask Damien about his strategic direction for 2022-2025 and the lessons learnt from being in the influential role at this ‘An Hour in the Room interview. During the event, we invited delegates to join the conversation by submitting their Audience Q&A, where delegates asked Damien questions that matter to them.
An Hour in the Room with Damien Walker
We live in an era of fast and fundamental changes that unevenly impact geographies and generations. Strategic foresight can help institutions to keep pace with these changes and enable whole societies to flourish in an era of inevitable surprise and increasing social complexity. Last year, the Department of the Premier and Cabinet established a strategic foresight capability within the Strategy and Policy Division. As well as directly developing bespoke foresight products for the State, the Foresight Unit works with all agencies across government to support the integration of foresight into strategy and policy development processes and build strategic foresight capabilities. A growing Foresight Community of Practice exists across government and beyond to ensure South Australia is fit for the future. During this session, we heard from five practitioners who have championed foresight in governments around the world and here in South Australia: People who attended had the chance to learn by doing as we explore critical uncertainties impacting the future of South Australia together. And if you are inspired by what you hear and want to learn more, you will hear more about different ways to engage.
